As part of the release of Chapter 3 of Fortnite at the end of last year, Epic transitioned the game from Unreal Engine 4, which debuted in 2012, to Unreal Engine 5. It comes as more companies both within and outside of games start to become more adjusted to the technology. Its release comes with two sample projects users can check out: Lyra, a multiplayer shooter that works across Unreal’s online capabilities, as well as City Samples, which shows how the city within The Matrix Awakens tech demo that was released last December for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S was made. Following its early access release in May of last year, Epic Games has made available the final version of Unreal Engine 5 to download for free for use to everyone.
